How Long Does It Take to Walk a Mile?
Most adults walk a mile in 15 to 20 minutes, a pace of 3 to 4 miles per hour. A brisk walk takes about 13 to 15 minutes per mile, and a relaxed stroll can take 20 to 25 minutes. A kilometre takes roughly 9 to 12 minutes.

Walking pace chart
To work out your own time for any distance, divide 60 by your speed in miles per hour to get minutes per mile. At 3.2 mph, that is 60 ÷ 3.2 = 18 minutes 45 seconds per mile.
| Walking speed | Pace | Time for 1 mile | Time for 1 km |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow, relaxed | 2.5 mph (4 km/h) | 24 min | 15 min |
| Easy, everyday | 3 mph (4.8 km/h) | 20 min | 12.5 min |
| Moderate | 3.5 mph (5.6 km/h) | 17 min | 10.7 min |
| Brisk | 4 mph (6.4 km/h) | 15 min | 9.4 min |
| Very brisk / power walk | 4.5 mph (7.2 km/h) | 13 min 20 s | 8.3 min |
| Race walking | 6+ mph (9.7+ km/h) | Under 10 min | Under 6.2 min |
What changes your walking time
- Fitness and effort. "Brisk" for one person is easy for another. A good guide to brisk walking is that you can talk but not sing.
- Age. Typical comfortable walking speed is fairly steady through middle age and slows gradually after about 60. Many healthy adults in their 70s walk at around 2.5 to 3 mph.
- Height and stride. Taller walkers cover more ground per step at the same cadence.
- Terrain. Hills, sand, snow and rough trails can add several minutes per mile. A treadmill at a 1 % incline roughly matches walking outdoors on flat ground.
- Stops. Traffic lights and crossings add up quickly on a city route, so time a continuous loop when you want a true pace.
Steps in a mile
A mile is usually about 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps, depending on stride length. Taller people and faster walkers take fewer, longer steps. That means 10,000 steps a day is roughly 4 to 5 miles, or about 80 to 100 minutes of walking at an everyday pace, spread across the day.
If you want your own number, walk a measured mile (four laps of a standard 400 m running track is 1,600 m, just 9 m short of a mile) and count your steps or read them from your phone.
How to time your own mile
- Find a measured distance: a running track, a marked trail, or a route you have measured with a map app.
- Warm up with 3 to 5 minutes of easy walking.
- Open the stopwatch on your phone and start it as you cross the start line.
- On a track, press Lap each time you pass the start. Four laps plus about 9 metres is one mile, and the lap times show whether you slowed down.
- Stop the stopwatch at the finish and note the time. Repeat every couple of weeks at the same place to see progress.
The stopwatch keeps running if your screen locks or you switch apps, and the lap list stays on screen until you reset it.
Typical walking pace by age
Studies that measure comfortable walking speed find it stays fairly steady through early and middle adulthood and slows gradually in later life. The figures below are typical comfortable speeds, not targets; a brisk walk at any age will be faster.
| Age | Typical comfortable speed | About one mile in |
|---|---|---|
| 20-29 | 3.0-3.1 mph | 19-20 min |
| 30-49 | 3.0-3.2 mph | 19-20 min |
| 50-59 | 2.9-3.1 mph | 19-21 min |
| 60-69 | 2.7-3.0 mph | 20-22 min |
| 70-79 | 2.4-2.8 mph | 21-25 min |
| 80+ | 2.0-2.4 mph | 25-30 min |
Walking speed is also a useful health signal. Doctors sometimes measure it in older adults, because a slow and slowing pace can be an early sign that strength or balance needs attention.
Common distances and how long they take
Add time for breaks on longer walks. Hikers often use Naismith's rule: allow an hour for every 5 km (3 miles) on the flat, plus an hour for every 600 m (2,000 ft) of climbing.
| Distance | Easy (3 mph) | Brisk (4 mph) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 km | 12.5 min | 9.5 min |
| 1 mile | 20 min | 15 min |
| 2 miles | 40 min | 30 min |
| 5 km | 62 min | 47 min |
| 5 miles | 1 h 40 min | 1 h 15 min |
| 10 km | 2 h 4 min | 1 h 33 min |
| Half marathon (13.1 mi) | 4 h 22 min | 3 h 17 min |
Getting faster
The quickest way to raise your walking pace is to add short faster sections to your normal walk. Try intervals: 1 minute brisk, 2 minutes easy, repeated six to eight times. The interval timer beeps at each switch so you do not need to watch the clock.
Shorter, quicker steps help more than long strides. Swing your arms bent at about 90 degrees, stand tall and push off from the toes. Over a few weeks most people take a minute or more off their mile time.
Many health guidelines suggest about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. Thirty minutes of brisk walking on five days meets that, which is roughly two miles a day.
