How to Add Hours and Minutes (With Worked Examples and a Timesheet Method)

Adding hours and minutes is easy once you remember one rule: carry 60, not 100. Step-by-step worked examples, a method for adding a whole list of durations like a weekly timesheet, how to convert totals to decimal hours, and the mistakes that cause wrong totals.

To add hours and minutes, add the hours together, add the minutes together, then turn every 60 minutes into 1 hour. For example, 2 h 45 min + 1 h 30 min = 3 h 75 min, and since 75 minutes is 1 hour and 15 minutes, the answer is 4 h 15 min.

The reason this trips people up is that we are used to carrying at 10 or 100. Time carries at 60. Forget that once and a timesheet total can be off by hours. If you would rather skip the arithmetic, the add and subtract time calculator does it instantly.

The quick answer

  1. Add all the minutes.
  2. Divide the minutes total by 60. The whole number is extra hours, the remainder is minutes.
  3. Add all the hours, plus the extra hours from step 2.
  4. Write the answer as hours and minutes.

| Example | Hours | Minutes | Carry | Answer | |---|---|---|---|---| | 1:20 + 2:30 | 3 | 50 | none | 3 h 50 min | | 2:45 + 1:30 | 3 | 75 | 75 = 1 h 15 | 4 h 15 min | | 0:50 + 0:40 + 0:35 | 0 | 125 | 125 = 2 h 5 | 2 h 5 min |

Worked example 1: two durations

Add 3 h 25 min and 4 h 50 min.

  • Minutes: 25 + 50 = 75
  • 75 minutes = 1 hour and 15 minutes (75 - 60 = 15)
  • Hours: 3 + 4 = 7, plus the carried 1 = 8
  • Answer: 8 h 15 min

Worked example 2: no carry needed

Add 1 h 10 min and 2 h 35 min.

  • Minutes: 10 + 35 = 45 (less than 60, nothing to carry)
  • Hours: 1 + 2 = 3
  • Answer: 3 h 45 min

Worked example 3: carrying more than one hour

Add 45 min, 55 min, 50 min and 40 min.

  • Minutes: 45 + 55 + 50 + 40 = 190
  • 190 / 60 = 3 with 10 left over (3 x 60 = 180, 190 - 180 = 10)
  • Answer: 3 h 10 min

When you have a big pile of minutes, dividing by 60 is quicker than subtracting 60 again and again.

Worked example 4: hours, minutes and seconds

The same idea works one level down. Seconds also carry at 60.

Add 1:42:35 and 0:28:50 (h:mm:ss).

  • Seconds: 35 + 50 = 85 = 1 min 25 s. Write 25, carry 1 minute.
  • Minutes: 42 + 28 + 1 = 71 = 1 h 11 min. Write 11, carry 1 hour.
  • Hours: 1 + 0 + 1 = 2
  • Answer: 2:11:25

Adding a list of durations: the timesheet method

Weekly timesheets are where most errors happen, because you are adding five or more entries. Here is a reliable way to do it on paper or in a notes app.

| Day | Hours worked | |---|---| | Monday | 7 h 45 min | | Tuesday | 8 h 20 min | | Wednesday | 6 h 50 min | | Thursday | 8 h 05 min | | Friday | 7 h 35 min |

Step 1. Add the hours column: 7 + 8 + 6 + 8 + 7 = 36 hours

Step 2. Add the minutes column: 45 + 20 + 50 + 5 + 35 = 155 minutes

Step 3. Convert the minutes: 155 / 60 = 2 with 35 left over, so 2 h 35 min

Step 4. Combine: 36 h + 2 h 35 min = 38 h 35 min

Keep the columns separate until the very end. Mixing them partway through is where people lose track.

If your daily hours start as clock times (for example, 8:45 AM to 5:15 PM with a 30-minute lunch), work out each day's duration first. Our guide on how many hours are between two times shows how, and the hours calculator handles start times, end times and breaks for a whole week.

Converting the total to decimal hours

Payroll systems and invoices usually want decimal hours, such as 38.58 instead of 38 h 35 min. To convert, divide the minutes by 60.

  • 35 / 60 = 0.583...
  • 38 h 35 min = 38.58 hours (rounded to two decimals)

| Minutes | Decimal | |---|---| | 5 | 0.08 | | 10 | 0.17 | | 15 | 0.25 | | 20 | 0.33 | | 30 | 0.50 | | 40 | 0.67 | | 45 | 0.75 | | 50 | 0.83 |

Adding in decimal instead

Another method is to convert every entry to decimal first, add them like ordinary numbers, and convert back at the end if needed. This works well in a spreadsheet. On paper it can introduce small rounding errors, because values like 20 minutes (0.333...) do not divide neatly. If accuracy to the minute matters, add in hours and minutes and convert only the final total.

Common mistakes

Carrying at 100. Writing 2.45 + 1.30 = 3.75 and reading it as 3 h 75 min, or worse, 3 h 45 min. Hours and minutes are not decimals.

Confusing 1.5 hours with 1 h 50 min. 1.5 hours is 1 h 30 min. This one causes real payroll mistakes.

Forgetting to add the carried hour. You convert 75 minutes to 1 h 15 min, write the 15, and then forget the 1 when adding the hours.

Mixing clock times and durations. 9:30 is a time of day. 9 h 30 min is a length of time. Adding two clock times (9:30 + 2:00) only makes sense if one of them is really a duration.

Rounding each entry. Rounding every day to the nearest quarter-hour before adding can shift the weekly total. Follow your employer's rounding policy, and round once if you can.

When subtraction comes in

Sometimes you need to take time away, such as removing a lunch break. Subtraction works the same way in reverse: if you do not have enough minutes, borrow 60 from the hours.

Example: 5 h 10 min - 1 h 45 min

  • 10 minutes is less than 45, so borrow 1 hour: 4 h 70 min
  • 70 - 45 = 25 minutes; 4 - 1 = 3 hours
  • Answer: 3 h 25 min

The add and subtract time tool handles both directions, and the time duration calculator finds the gap between two times or dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do you add hours and minutes together? Add the hours and minutes separately, then convert every 60 minutes into one extra hour. For example, 1 h 40 min + 2 h 35 min = 3 h 75 min = 4 h 15 min.

How many minutes is 1.5 hours? 90 minutes, or 1 hour 30 minutes. The .5 means half an hour, not 50 minutes.

How do I add up hours on a timesheet? Total the hours column, total the minutes column, convert the minutes into hours and minutes, then combine. Or use the hours calculator to do the whole week at once.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal? Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. 7 h 45 min = 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours.

Can I add time in Excel or Google Sheets? Yes, both handle time values, but the cell format matters. If a total over 24 hours looks wrong, change the format to show elapsed hours (often shown as [h]:mm).

Is there a calculator for adding hours and minutes? Yes. The ClockAura add and subtract time calculator adds or subtracts any list of durations and shows the result in hours, minutes and decimal hours.
