How Many Work Hours Are in a Year?
A standard full-time year is 2,080 work hours: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. After about 11 paid public holidays and two weeks of vacation, most US full-time employees actually work around 1,900 to 2,000 hours a year.

Where 2,080 comes from
Payroll and HR teams use 2,080 because it is simple: 52 weeks multiplied by a 40-hour week. It treats every week as a working week and ignores holidays, which is exactly why it is useful for converting pay. A salary divided by 2,080 gives a stable hourly rate that does not change from year to year.
The calendar is a little messier. A year is 52 weeks plus one day (two in a leap year), so it contains 260 to 262 weekdays. 2026 and 2027 both have 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at eight hours a day. 2028 is a leap year that starts on a Saturday, so it has only 260 weekdays, or 2,080 hours.
The real number after time off
Few people work every weekday. Here is how a typical US full-time year shrinks once paid time off is taken out:
| Step | Hours |
|---|---|
| 261 weekdays × 8 hours | 2,088 |
| Minus 11 federal holidays | 2,000 |
| Minus 10 days (2 weeks) vacation | 1,920 |
| Minus 5 sick or personal days | 1,880 |
So a realistic figure for hours actually at work is 1,850 to 2,000. Private employers do not all give every federal holiday, so check your own handbook. In the UK, full-time employees get at least 5.6 weeks of paid leave a year (28 days for a five-day week, which can include bank holidays), so a 37.5-hour UK worker is at work for roughly 1,740 hours.
Work hours for other schedules
The monthly column is the yearly total divided by 12, which is what payroll uses for salaried staff. Individual months vary from 160 to 184 hours at 40 hours a week depending on how many weekdays they contain.
| Hours per week | Hours per year (× 52) | Average per month |
|---|---|---|
| 20 (part-time) | 1,040 | 86.7 |
| 30 | 1,560 | 130 |
| 35 | 1,820 | 151.7 |
| 37.5 | 1,950 | 162.5 |
| 40 | 2,080 | 173.3 |
| 45 | 2,340 | 195 |
| 48 | 2,496 | 208 |
Turning a salary into an hourly rate (and back)
Divide the annual salary by the hours in your working year. On the standard 2,080 basis, $50,000 a year is $24.04 an hour, $75,000 is $36.06 and $100,000 is $48.08. To go the other way, multiply the hourly rate by 2,080: $20 an hour is $41,600 a year.
If you want the rate for time you are actually working, divide by your real hours instead. $75,000 over 1,920 hours is $39.06 an hour, nearly $3 more than the headline rate, because paid holidays are part of the package.
Freelancers should go further still. Once admin, sales and unpaid gaps are included, 1,200 to 1,500 billable hours a year is common, so an hourly rate that matches a salary needs to be noticeably higher than salary ÷ 2,080.
Work hours in each month of 2026
Monthly hours depend on how many weekdays fall in the month. At eight hours a day, before any public holidays are taken off:
| Month (2026) | Weekdays | Hours at 8 h/day |
|---|---|---|
| January | 22 | 176 |
| February | 20 | 160 |
| March | 22 | 176 |
| April | 22 | 176 |
| May | 21 | 168 |
| June | 22 | 176 |
| July | 23 | 184 |
| August | 21 | 168 |
| September | 22 | 176 |
| October | 22 | 176 |
| November | 21 | 168 |
| December | 23 | 184 |
| Total | 261 | 2,088 |
Hourly workers paid monthly will see their pay change from month to month for this reason, while salaried staff are usually paid one twelfth of the annual figure every month regardless.
Work hours in other countries
Standard full-time hours differ around the world, so "a working year" does too. A 35-hour week, the legal reference in France, gives 1,820 hours before leave. Many UK and Australian employers use 37.5 or 38 hours. India's factory and shop laws allow up to 48 hours a week, which is 2,496 hours a year on the 52-week basis. Statutory paid leave also ranges widely, from 20 days a year in much of the EU to none at all under US federal law, where paid holidays depend on the employer.
International comparisons of hours actually worked per employee usually land between about 1,300 and 2,200 hours a year, with the US typically in the upper-middle of that range and countries such as Germany and Denmark near the bottom.
Tracking your own hours accurately
Annual totals are only as good as the weekly numbers behind them. Log the start and finish of each shift and any unpaid break, then add them up at the end of the week. The hours calculator handles start and end times, breaks and overnight shifts, and the decimal hours converter turns a total like 38 hours 45 minutes into 38.75 for a timesheet.
If you are not sure how to handle lunch breaks, rounding or shifts that cross midnight, our step-by-step guide on how to calculate hours worked walks through each case with examples.
