How Many Seconds Are in a Year? Every Unit, Worked Out

A common year of 365 days has 31,536,000 seconds. A leap year of 366 days has 31,622,400 seconds. Averaged over the Gregorian calendar (365.2425 days) a year is 31,556,952 seconds, which is the figure scientists and converters usually mean by "one year".

The quick answer table

Every number below starts from the same three facts: 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. Multiply those together and a day is 86,400 seconds. Everything else is that number multiplied by a count of days.

How the year figure is worked out

Take the 86,400 seconds in one day and multiply by 365. That gives 31,536,000 seconds, the answer most people want for an ordinary calendar year such as 2026 or 2027.

A leap year adds one day, 29 February, so it gains another 86,400 seconds: 31,536,000 + 86,400 = 31,622,400. The next leap year is 2028.

The "average year" is different again. Because the Gregorian calendar adds a leap day in most years divisible by four but skips it in century years not divisible by 400, the long-run average year is 365.2425 days. Multiply that by 86,400 and you get 31,556,952 seconds. Astronomers sometimes use the Julian year of exactly 365.25 days instead, which is 31,557,600 seconds. If you see slightly different "seconds in a year" figures online, this is almost always why.

Why months are awkward

Months are the only unit with no single answer, because they run from 28 to 31 days. February in a common year has 2,419,200 seconds, a 30-day month such as April has 2,592,000 and a 31-day month such as October has 2,678,400.

When a spreadsheet, a salary calculation or a science problem needs "one month" as a fixed number, it usually takes one twelfth of an average year: 30.436875 days, or 2,629,746 seconds. That is fine for averages and estimates, but for anything contractual, such as interest or rent, count the real days instead. The date and time difference calculator does that for any two dates.

What about leap seconds?

Since 1972, the world's official time scale (UTC) has occasionally added a leap second to stay in step with the Earth's slightly irregular rotation. Twenty-seven have been added so far, always at the end of June or December, which means a handful of past years were one second longer than the table says.

For everyday maths you can ignore them. They are rare, none has been added since the end of 2016, and in 2022 the international body that governs weights and measures voted to stop adding them by 2035. Computer clocks based on Unix time ignore them too.

Big numbers that are easier to picture

Seconds get large quickly, and a few landmarks help them make sense:

  • One million seconds is about 11 days and 14 hours.
  • One billion seconds is about 31 years and 8 months, so most people pass their "billionth second" in their early thirties.
  • The 525,600 minutes in a year works out to about 10.5 million seconds of sleep if you sleep eight hours a night, or roughly a third of the year.
  • A 40-hour working week is 144,000 seconds of work out of the 604,800 in the week, a little under a quarter.

If you want your own number, the Age in Seconds counter works it out live from your date of birth, and our article on how many seconds old you are explains the maths behind it.

Worked examples people actually ask about

How many seconds are in 2026? 2026 is not a leap year, so it has 365 days and 31,536,000 seconds. 2028 is a leap year and has 31,622,400.

How many seconds until the weekend? From Friday at 5 pm to Monday at 9 am is 64 hours, which is 64 × 3,600 = 230,400 seconds. For a live count to any date, the countdown to date tool shows days, hours, minutes and seconds ticking down.

How many seconds are in 8 hours of sleep? 8 × 3,600 = 28,800 seconds. Over a year of eight-hour nights that is 10,512,000 seconds, about a third of the year.

How many seconds are in a school year? A typical 180-day school year with 6.5-hour days is 180 × 6.5 × 3,600 = 4,212,000 seconds of class time.

How many seconds have I been alive? Multiply your age in days by 86,400. Someone who has lived exactly 30 years (10,958 days, including 7 or 8 leap days) has been alive for about 946.8 million seconds.

Seconds, minutes and hours: the conversion rules

  • Seconds to minutes: divide by 60. 450 seconds is 7.5 minutes.
  • Seconds to hours: divide by 3,600. 9,000 seconds is 2.5 hours.
  • Seconds to days: divide by 86,400. 1,000,000 seconds is 11.57 days.
  • Days to seconds: multiply by 86,400. 3 days is 259,200 seconds.
  • Hours to seconds: multiply by 3,600. 1.5 hours is 5,400 seconds.

If a result comes out as a decimal of an hour, such as 2.75 hours, the decimal hours converter turns it back into 2 hours 45 minutes.

Converting any duration yourself

To turn a duration into seconds, convert each part and add them. For 2 hours, 15 minutes and 30 seconds: 2 × 3,600 = 7,200, plus 15 × 60 = 900, plus 30, which is 8,130 seconds.

To go the other way, divide by 3,600 for whole hours, then divide the remainder by 60 for minutes. 10,000 seconds is 2 hours (7,200) with 2,800 left, which is 46 minutes (2,760) and 40 seconds.

For longer spans with dates involved, the time duration calculator and the add and subtract time tool do the carrying for you, and the stopwatch is the simplest way to measure a real duration to the hundredth of a second.
