EMOM Timer — Every Minute On the Minute
EMOM means Every Minute On the Minute: start your reps at the top of each minute and rest whatever time is left. This timer beeps at the top of every minute so you never watch the clock. Set the number of rounds and go.
About the EMOM timer
EMOM stands for Every Minute On the Minute — a training format where you start a set exercise at the top of every minute, do your prescribed reps, then rest for whatever time is left until the next minute begins. It is a staple of CrossFit and strength work because the clock paces you: finish your reps fast and you earn more rest; grind them out slowly and your rest shrinks. This timer is set to classic 60-second rounds and beeps at the top of each minute, so you never have to watch the clock. Set how many minutes you want to train and press Start.
When to use the EMOM timer
- CrossFit-style strength work — e.g. 5 power cleans at the top of every minute.
- Conditioning: 12 calories on the rower or bike each minute, rest the remainder.
- Skill practice — a set number of pull-ups, kettlebell swings or push-ups per minute.
- Pacing a long effort into clean, repeatable one-minute chunks.
- Coaching a class where everyone starts each round together on the beep.
- Building work capacity by adding rounds week over week.
How to use the EMOM timer
- Pick one exercise and a rep count you can finish inside 60 seconds with rest to spare.
- Set the number of rounds (minutes) you want to train — 10 is a common start.
- Press Start. At the top of each minute you will hear a beep — begin your reps.
- Finish your reps, then rest until the next beep. Faster reps = more rest.
- When the rounds are done, the timer stops. Scale reps so the last rounds stay hard but doable.
Tips for getting the most out of EMOM
- Choose a rep count that leaves at least 15–20 seconds of rest in the early rounds.
- If you cannot finish the reps before the next minute, the load or reps are too high — scale down.
- EMOM is great for keeping form honest: the rest is built in, so quality stays high.
- Warm up first — the first beep comes fast and you want to be ready to move.
- For all-out 20-second bursts instead, use the Tabata timer; for custom work/rest, the interval timer.
EMOM timer FAQ
What does EMOM mean?
Every Minute On the Minute. You begin a set exercise at the start of each minute, complete your reps, and rest until the next minute starts.
How long should an EMOM workout be?
Most EMOMs run 10 to 20 minutes (rounds). Beginners often start at 8–10 minutes and build up as their work capacity improves.
What is the difference between EMOM and Tabata?
Tabata is fixed 20-seconds-work / 10-seconds-rest for 8 rounds (4 minutes). EMOM uses full 60-second rounds where your rest depends on how fast you finish your reps.
Will the timer beep if I switch tabs?
The countdown keeps running in the background, but browsers can throttle audio in a hidden tab. Keep the tab visible — full-screen is ideal — so you hear every minute beep.
Can I change the round length?
This page is set to classic 60-second EMOM rounds. For custom work and rest lengths, use the full interval timer.
